We would like to warmly welcome you to the Project Arts family and are excited that you have decided to join us this summer! We are dedicated to welcoming you to the arts community at Duke and supporting your transition into college. While we are advertised as an art-centric program, we are far more focused on building genuine community amongst our participants and our staffers, using our shared appreciation for the arts as our way into this community.

We cannot wait to welcome you as a pArt of the family and are looking forward to getting to know each of you! Please reach out to us for anything; we’re here for you!

Sara Heilman & Eli Kline

Co-Program Directors, Project Arts 2021

This year, Project Arts aims to provide an in-depth introduction to the arts communities at Duke and in Durham, while also creating an inclusive social support network through a common passion for the arts. Though the status of arts groups has not been determined yet, we will provide information, connections, and tools that first-year students need to get involved in the flourishing on-campus art community.

More importantly, pArts hopes to create an inclusive social and support network through our common passion for the arts. Along with the arts-related programming we will have each day, the majority of our activities will give you an opportunity to connect with your fellow first-years as well as upperclassmen staffers.

pArts Lingo:

Below is some lingo useful to know for when we talk about pArts:

  • Crewling: a first-year participant in pArts
  • Crew: small group of crewlings from different arts; each crew will have at least two staffers
  • Arts Crew: small groups of crewlings that are organized according to their arts; participants will be with these crews each day during “arts time”
    • Arts include: theater, music, dance, visual arts, visual media, creative writing
  • Staffer: an upperclassmen student who acts as a crew leader, arts leader, coordinator, or driver
  • Crew Leader: a student staffer who is the point-person for each crew
  • Arts Leader: specialized arts-focused students who head up the arts crews and run “arts time”
  • Program Directors: the two head staffers of the program
  • GTHC: “Go To Hell, Carolina,” because the rivalry is real
